Is an International Driving Permit (IDP) Necessary?

For foreign visitors driving in Japan, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required depending on the country or region that issued your driving licence.

Where an IDP is required, you must present:

  • Your original valid driving licence
  • A valid International Driving Permit (IDP) recognised in Japan
  • Your valid passport

Please note that having a driving licence written in English does not automatically mean that you are permitted to drive in Japan without an IDP.

Drivers from certain countries or regions may be permitted to drive using their original driving licence together with an official Japanese translation, subject to Japan's applicable driving regulations.

Please ensure that you have the correct and valid driving documents before making your booking. WAHDAH reserves the right to refuse vehicle handover if the required driving documents are incomplete or invalid.
